Top four all lock horns in Cavan

By Shaun Casey

IT’S all to play for in the Cavan clubs leagues this weekend with the semi-finals taking place on Friday evening. Four teams head into the last four battles with their eyes set on capturing the title.

League leaders and current league champions Ramor United are the frontrunners to retain their title having made an impressive defence so far this season. From their 12 league outings, Ramor have yet to taste defeat, winning ten and drawing two.

Ramor ended a 28-year wait for a top tier league title last season with two goals from man of the match Eoin Somerville and another through Conor Bradley to see off Gowna in impressive fashion, 3-8 to 0-13.

They meet Cuchulainn’s this weekend, who finished fourth in the league table. Cuchulainn’s recorded five wins from their 12 outings and lost out to Ramor as recently as two weeks ago by eight-points.

That sort of form carried Ramor United through to the championship decider, but Crosserlough weren’t too be denied and they lifted the Oliver Plunkett Cup for the second time in five years.

Ryan Daly’s side finished third in the league table and head into the league semi-finals this weekend where they’ll face Gowna, who will be aiming to get back to the showpiece following last year’s disappointing display.

Crosserlough march into the game off the back of a two-point defeat to Castlerahan in the final round, although their place in the semi-finals had already been confirmed, so they won’t read too much into that result.

Gowna and Crosserlough locked horns in the league back in the end of May and nothing could separate the two teams. They had to accept a share of the spoils in round nine, drawing 1-9 to 0-12.

Crosserlough were five-points clear heading into the final few minutes but a two-pointer from Ryan Brady along with an Oisin Pierson goal earned Gowna a tie. Another tight encounter is to be expected this week.
