FOLLOWING two years in charge, Raymond Galligan has announced with immediate effect his decision to step down as Cavan senior football team manager, citing work and family commitments.
The Lacken clubman was long-standing goalkeeper for the Breffni County before succeeding Mickey Graham at the helm at the outset of the 2024 season.
During his tutelage as manager, Cavan had two steady Division Two campaigns, coming particularly close this season to achieving promotion to the top flight, though they struggled for consistency in the championship arena.
The Cavan County Board have released a statement thanking Galligan, who captained Cavan to Ulster Championship glory in 2020, for his efforts over the years.
“Cavan County Board would like to sincerely thank Raymond and his entire backroom team and all who helped over the two seasons, selectors, coaches, physios, Doctors, nutritionist, S & C, kit men, stats and coordinators.
“Raymond has been a wonderful servant to Cavan GAA over the years as a footballer, team captain, manager and a positive role model for all. Raymond always had time for all the younger fans which did not go unnoticed.
“As a player Raymond made 114 appearances scoring an impressive 1-122 as a goalkeeper for the majority of his Cavan career, he captained the team from 2019 -2023, lifting the Anglo-Celt Cup in 2020 and received an All-Star the same year..
“Raymond expressed his gratitude to all the players for their huge commitment and effort for the Cavan cause. They gave it their all and were a great group to work with. Raymond has cited work commitments and having a young family as the main reasons for his departure from the role..
“Raymond would like to thank the county board under Chairperson Mark O’Rourke, former Chairperson Kieran Callaghan and the officers for the opportunity to manage Cavan and for the continued support over the past two years. He wishes Cavan all the best in the future.
“Cavan GAA would like to put on record their appreciation and gratitude for the huge commitment and effort Raymond and his management have given to Cavan football. We wish Raymond , his wife Niamh and their 2 young children the best in the future and thank you again from all in Cavan GAA.”
