Derry face into another tough assignment

By Michael McMullan

DERRY will take on Laois on Sunday as their Division Two campaign swings into round two.

The Oakleafers travel south on the back of a chastening home defeat at the hands of Kerry last weekend in the league opener.

The Kingdom hit two early goals as they shot into a commanding interval lead.

Shéa Cassidy and Deaglan Foley were the main scorers for Johnny McGarvey’s side with Conor Coyle and Joesph Mulholland – on his league debut – also landing points.

Derry came into the league on the back of winning the Conor McGurk Cup for the first time thanks to a late goal from Christy McNaughton.

There have been changes in the Derry squad with Cahal Murray, Gerald Bradley, John and Richie Mullan missing from the team that contested
last year’s Christy Ring Cup final.

On top of injuries to Eamon Conway, James Friel and Sean Cassidy, Derry have been forced to call on new blood.

There has been a return for Darragh McGilligan. Ryan Magill and Deaglan Foley were their joint captains for the McGurk Cup.

Patrick Turner was in fine form and carried it into pre-season. Cormac O’Doherty, Meehaul McGrath, brothers Shéa and Eamon Cassidy are in board after their club campaign..

Derry will know what’s coming down the tracks this weekend after Laois put in a strong performance to overcome Mayo.

After a disappointing start to 2025, Johnny McGarvey was pleased with the strides made over the remainder of the campaign.

Mayo will visit Celtic Park the following weekend before the break in the league.

Derry will then conclude their campaign against Meath (A), London (H) and Westmeath (A).
