CIARÁN Meenagh has stepped away from his role as Down coach, Gaelic Life understands, with the Tyrone man set to be appointed as the new Derry manager as soon as Thursday.
While the announcement may end up being put back, Derry sources have confirmed that it may be announced at the launch of their club championship draws, but have added that a few details have yet to be finalised.
One thing that does appear clear is that Meenagh will have a big-hitter in his backroom team in the former of Oakleaf 2022 All-Star Chrissy McKaigue.
While Down GAA have opted not to confirm Meenagh’s departure, Gaelic Life understands that he will not be involved with Conor Laverty next season and will be back along the line for Derry.
Meenagh, a selector under Rory Gallagher, took on the role as interim manager when Gallagher stepped down after Derry’s Ulster final win over Armagh in 2023 following allegations about his private life.
They would go on to nearly defeat eventual champions Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final before losing out, with Meenagh confirming to Gaelic Life soon after that he was not seeking the job on a permanent basis.
