In their first ever championship meeting, Donegal overcame Kerry in a fiercely contested last eight encounter.

Colm McFadden’s goal helped the Ulster champions into a 1-4-0-5 half-time lead.

Jim McGuinness’s men grew in strength after the interval and built up a six-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

A major from Kieran Donaghy accompanied by scores through Anthony Maher and Paul Galvin reduced the arrears to just one late on. However, Karl Lacey kicked the insurance score for Donegal.

Kerry claimed their 37th All-Ireland Senior Football Championship courtesy of a three-point victory over Donegal at Croke Park.

Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s side got off to a perfect start as Paul Geaney fired low past Paul Durcan after 50 seconds.

Michael Murphy’s frees kept Donegal in touch and they were level at the break.

Kieran Donaghy bagged a second Kerry goal and they held on for victory with Colm McFadden striking the post at the death as Donegal were defeated.

Donegal and Kerry were inseparable in a thrilling contest at Croke Park in the second group game of the Super 8s.

Kerry led by 0-10 to 0-9 at the break.

A Paul Geaney three-pointer gave Peter Keane’s men a two-point lead but Michael Murphy soon cancelled it out with a penalty.

The remaining 15 minutes followed a point for point pattern with the pair trading the last twelve scores. Michael Murphy slotted over the final one of these, meaning the sides shared the spoils.
