TONY BOYLE: “A nice place to get a result”

Teams played for: An Clochan Liath (Dungloe) and Donegal.

Your current involvement: Manager of club minor girls and senior ladies teams.

Which club game, that you played in, will you never forget and why?

A championship game down in Magheragallan v Gaoth Dobhair. I think it was in 1990. We were only in Division Two and they were one of the favourites for that year’s championship. We beat them well and I kicked 1-10. It’s always a nice place to get a result.

Which club game, that you watched, will you never forget and why?

All-Ireland Gaeltacht Junior Ladies final 2023 because of how well the Dungloe girls played.

They kicked 2-15 in the first half and to win it for the first time at our neighbouring club, where we had a big local support.

Which county game, that you played in, will you never forget and why?

It would have to be the All-Ireland final 1992 for the obvious reasons. To be part of the first ever Donegal team to win it will always be special.

Which county game, that you watched, will you never forget and why?

The 2014 All-Ireland semi-final win over Dublin. I don’t think anyone gave Donegal a chance going into that game.

What was the funniest thing you ever saw in a game?

The Dubs in the Hill singing a not so complimentary song (it rhymed with anchor) about Declan Bonner as he was stretched off in a league semi-final. I didn’t realise at the time that it was a serious injury.

What was the strangest thing you ever saw in a game?

Shov (Martin Shovlin) or Joyce (McMullen) kicking a score.

What was the most memorable performance from a player in a game that you watched?

Canavan in the ‘95 All-Ireland final.

What was the most memorable performance from a player in a game that you played?

It was Manus Boyle in ‘92 final. To be fair, Tommy Ryan was unlucky not to start the final after a great Ulster campaign but you can’t argue with 0-9 in an All-Ireland senior final.

What did you love about the games you played in?

The one-on-one battles all over the pitch. It was either win your own battle or you got the curly finger.

What did you hate about the games you played in?

Manus Boyle and Declan Bonner sprinting over and wrestling the ball out of my hands after I got fouled – nearly killed – straight in front of the posts.
