Holmes confident Canavan can deal with the hype

Darragh Canavan produced a glittering attacking display in Tyrone U17’s semi-final win over Down

TYRONE’S surge to the inagural Ulster U17 Championship final against Cavan this Sunday has been spearheaded by a talented youngster with a rather familar surname.

Darragh Canavan’s sparkling attacking performances with Tyrone and St Ciaran’s Ballygawley this year have already drawn inevitable comparisons with his father Peter Canavan, widely accepted as one of the greatest players of all time.

That’s a heavy cross to bear but team manager Collie Holmes says he can deal with the hype.

“Darragh is his own individual. From an early age he was going to be the ‘son of Peter’ and I suppose that’s very unfair on him. He’s a great lad in his own right, a great footballer in his own right.

“We’re hoping he continues to give the same effort. He has a special talent and there are other lads on the panel with qualities just as strong as his. I don’t want to put any undue pressure on him.

“He has the potential like all the other lads and we just hope they stay on the path and can help Tyrone football going forward.”
