Monaghan skipper Wylie calls for end to rules tinkering

MONAGHAN captain Ryan Wylie has called on the constant tinkering with GAA rules to come to an end.

The last couple of years have witnessed some big changes, such as the attacking and defensive mark, while for the 2021 season a new cynical penalty rule was in play while the advantage rule was also altered to negative reviews.

“I try not to foul in the first place but I found it very confusing to tell you the truth,” said Wylie ahead of Monaghan’s game with Fermanagh.

“I remember our first training back someone was shouting about this new rule and I thought it was just in hurling.

“It’s a completely separate point but I just feel that there are rules coming out of everywhere. Players are getting confused, referees are getting confused and it’s hard to know what’s really going on.

“Personally I haven’t thought much about it. When you’re in that close area you’re just trying not to give away fouls but when you do give away a foul you’re just hoping that the referee doesn’t have the perception that it was a cynical foul or next thing you know you’re off and potentially three points down from the penalty.

“The whole clarity thing around these rules, every year there seems to be another couple of rules added on for the sake of it. It’s quite confusing and nearly a bit annoying at this stage.

“It would be nice if these men actually came and consulted the players that are actually playing, maybe what actually is needed in football sometimes is to leave it alone.”
