Slaughtneil became the first Derry club to win the Ulster Club Hurling title on Sunday, following their 2-14 to 1-13 win against Loughgiel Shamrocks.
The victory provided them with a massive dose of relief following their agonising defeat to Cushendall in last year’s final. In their fourth year of competing in the competition they finally proved they are better than the best that Antrim has to offer.
Furthermore, Slaughtneil’s win proved that dual clubs can compete at the highest level, and that clubs in Ulster don’t necessarily need to focus on one club exclusively, in order to be successful. Their Camogs drew with Loughgiel as well, emphasising further that the club aren’t just dedicated to mens sports.
It was also an emotional day for the club as they remembered the loss of Thomas Cassidy, a mentor who died recently.
Fans from Derry and beyond used Twitter to congratulate the Robert Emmet’s
