Teammates: Down and Saul’s Ciarán Harney

Name: Ciarán Harney.

Age: 25.

Teams played for:

Saul, Down, Ollscoil na Banríona.

Which teammate has been the most inspirational and why?

Philly ‘Pampers’ Traynor. Picked up what looked like a career-ending hamstring injury about six weeks from championship and came back to help get us over the line in the final.

Who’s the best teammate to train with and why?

Rory Mullen. Had to say him or his Da would be on to me.

Which teammate is the worst to train with and why?

Pierce Laverty. Cuts corners. Always giggling.

Which teammate do you want to mark in training and why?

Lorcán, the wee bro. Competitive and always ends in a fight. A good laugh.

Which teammate do you dread marking in training and why?

Aodhán, the other bro. Always beats me in a fight.

Which teammate is the best on journeys away?

James Mahoney. Great for a story or two.

Which teammate is the worst for journeys away?

Conor Francis. “Do you think I’m starting?” every five minutes.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve heard in training or in a match, and who said it?

A supporter of ours pulled a couple of us after a defeat and said “Why do you boys keep going for goals? Take your points because if you score a point it takes two to beat it. So, if you score five points, they have to score 10 to beat it”. Not quite sure of the maths on that one.

What’s the worst excuse you’ve heard to get out of training?

Mark Curran has had a few. Mental how many boilers he’s had to fix on a Sunday morning. He once said he couldn’t make it as he was working in Dublin for the week, but our manager drove past him in Saul on the way to training.

Which teammate is the loudest in the changing room?

Joe Hayes. Man loves an inspirational speech and imparting a few life lessons.

Which teammate is the most sensible?

Gareth Robinson. Loves to head home early on a championship Monday to make sure he gets the eight hours in.

Who is the smartest of all your team mates?

Couldn’t really put anyone out on their own from the Saul squad sadly. Shea Heffron from the Queen’s days. He is very switched on.

Who’s the best teammate to celebrate with?

Jamie Morgan never lets himself down. Could pick any of the Saul boys really. I went around Lower Ormeau with some serious characters back in the Sigerson days too.
