Termon and Glenswilly must do it all again

TERMON captain Ryan McFadden doesn’t expect motivation to be an issue for either side when they travel to Glenswilly for Sunday’s tie of the Senior Football Championship preliminary quarter-final round.

The teams know each other well and both will have had designs of going deep into the championship but this is winner takes all.

Glenswilly narrowly defeated Termon on the opening night of the championship and McFadden hopes his team can learn from that.

“It definitely won’t be hard to get up for it,” he said. “Games like this is why you play football.

“The last game with Glenswilly was very nip-and-tuck. It will probably much the same.

“I’m sure they won’t need any motivation and we won’t either.

“We know each other so well from going to school, and there will be a couple of cousins playing against each other so you might have a few divided households over the next week.

“Any time you play your local rivals, it’s going to be a tight affair and we will just hopefully get one over the line and do one better than we did in the opening game.”

Termon endured a challenging evening against Naomh Conaill but a win against Glenfin and a draw with Dungloe helped them get through to the knock-out stages.

It was interesting that Caolan McDaid parachuted some fresh faces into his starting line-up for the Dungloe match and McFadden feels there is strength-in-depth within the squad.

“We have over 40 men at training between reserves and seniors.

“The club is in a good place in that sense and we have plenty of numbers, but there’s quality in that as well.

“We have seven or eight championship debutants this year and that’s a lot of men who jumped on from reserve football and U21s.

“Aaron Reid, Cormac Brady, Oisin Harkin and Oisin Cassidy all came in last week and they were massive players for us last year, and they were returning from injury and America.

“All those boys were great against Dungloe and the young boys like Shea Boyle and Ruairi Connaghan bring real energy as well. The team doesn’t get any weaker when we make subs.”
