Tyrone edged out by Kerry in low-scoring affair

All-Ireland MFC Quarter-Final

Kerry 0-8
Tyrone 1-4

By Michael McMullan

TYRONE’S hopes of an Ulster and All-Ireland double were dashed by Kerry in a low-scoring game on Saturday afternoon in Portlaoise.

The Red Hands trailed by a point at the break and only scored twice in the second half.

Kerry had a goal chance early on, but Callum Daly’s tackle prevented Odhran Ferris from finding the net.

Caolan Donnelly palmed Ronan Molloy’s pass to the net for the game’s opening score, but Tyrone failed to make use of the first half breeze.

Kerry had a three minute spell late in the half, after bossing the Tyrone kick-out, to go 0-5 to 1-1 ahead thanks to points from Jack Clifford, Cormac Dillon and Paddy Lane.

The Kingdom, leading 0-6 to 1-2 at the break, edged further ahead early in the second half with a monster point from Eddie Healy.

Tyrone had a goal chance when Caolan Donnelly was denied by O’Meara and later in the half, they had a glimmer of goal but Eoin McElholm’s intended fist pass to Donnelly went all the way to the Kerry ‘keeper.

Donnelly did manage a late point, but Kerry held on for victory.
