VITAL victories in two key matches four days apart last weekend have eased the relegation worries which were becoming increasingly prevalent around Gardrum Park.

The St Dympna’s defeated Donaghmore on Thursday night and then scored an impressive win against their old rivals from Trillick on Monday. It means that the side from nine to 13 points and seemingly well clear of the dreaded drop-zone near the bottom, and highlights the closely-fought nature of action in Division One and all three All-County League divisions.

It was a special evening for the team on Thursday as a large crowd watched their emphatic win over Donaghmore. Add in the presentation following their triumph in the Division One Reserve League and there was no doubting the optimism.

Senior selector and reserve manager, Sean McDonnell, is in no doubt about the importance of the reserve win for the seniors as they focus on the remainder of the league and the start of the senior championship in September.

“It was great for the reserves to win the league because you have to work hard for any title in Tyrone football. They have done well, they deserve their success and they’ll be working towards the championship,” he said.

“Our second string of players are training with the first team, and their keeping the pressure on them for matches as well. We have fairly good numbers and their efforts make for exciting training. They all trying to get on the senior team and aren’t just filling in spaces.

“It definitely helps the seniors. We have reserve players who are playing well and keeping the seniors on their toes. If they don’t show up or put in the effort, then there’s someone from the reserves just waiting for their chance.”

Dromore reserves play Carrickmore in the opening round of the championship, while their first team still have four matches remaining ahead of their opening game also against Carrickmore under the Friday night lights on September 4.
