McGarry steps down as Tyrone senior hurling manager

By Niall Gartland

STEPHEN McGarry has stepped aside after completing a three-year term at the helm of the Tyrone Senior Intercounty hurling team.

The Ballycastle man was appointed to the role heading into the 2024 season having been previously involved in a coaching capacity under his clubmate Michael McShane.

He led the team to Saturday’s Nickey Rackard Cup final against New York at Croke Park, a game they lost despite a gallant display.

This morning, Tyrone GAA confirmed McGarry’s decision to step down:

“Tyrone GAA wishes to announce that Stephen McGarry has stepped down from his position as Senior Hurling Manager following the completion of his three‑year term.

“Stephen has served with commitment, professionalism, and integrity throughout his tenure. His dedication to the players, management team, and Tyrone County Board has been evident in every aspect of his work. We acknowledge and sincerely appreciate the significant time, energy, and leadership he has given to the role.

“On behalf of Tyrone GAA, we extend our thanks to Stephen for his service and wish him every success in his future endeavours.

“Further updates regarding the senior management position will be communicated in due course.”

McGarry also posted a message on X expressing his gratitude to all those who donned the Tyrone jersey during his tenure.

“After six unforgettable years involved with Tyrone Senior Hurling, I have made the decision to step down from my role as Manager.

“While results will always be measured in wins and losses, I leave with immense pride in what has been built and complete confidence in the future of Tyrone Hurling.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to achieve the result we all wanted on Saturday. However, that outcome in no way diminishes the work, commitment and sacrifices made by the players throughout this campaign. They represented Tyrone with pride, honesty and determination.

“I have no doubt that many of these players will be walking up the steps of the Hogan Stand in the not-too-distant future. Tyrone now has a young, talented and committed group of players, supported by structures that I believe will continue to strengthen and develop for years to come.

“I would like to sincerely thank every player who wore the Tyrone jersey during my time involved. Your commitment, sacrifice and desire to improve made the role an absolute pleasure. The future is bright for this group and I look forward to watching their continued progress.

“I would also like to place on record my sincere thanks to my management team: Coaches Caolan Harvey, Chris McDonnell and Chris Kearns; analyst Joe Clifford; logistics team Aodhan McHugh, Clippers McNally, Aidan Maguire and Eunan Lyndsay; and medical team Eoghan Daly and David Morris.

“I would also like to remember Damian. His passing in 2022 was a devastating loss to Tyrone Hurling and to everyone who knew him. Damian was a huge motivating factor in my decision to take on this role and remained one throughout my time involved.

“Like everyone connected to Tyrone Hurling, I desperately wanted to bring success to this group and honour his memory.

“I would also like to thank the clubs across the county and Chairman Martin Sludden for their unwavering support. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey.”
