McKenna Cup – Alan Davidson and other potential stars

Down's win over Derry threw up a potential Fantasy star

Down’s win over Derry threw up a potential Fantasy star

Alan Davidson scored nine points for Down in their round two McKenna Cup victory over Derry, and in doing so kept the Mourne county’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.

What he also did was raise his profile for Gaelic Life Fantasy Football managers looking for a dark horse for this year’s competition.

The Bredagh star is untested at National League level, but that haul against Derry suggests that he is worth considering. Admittedly it was an experimental Derry side but nonetheless, nine points in a game is notable, and with seven frees, Davidson could get the shout as freetaker.

Cavan’s win Donegal saw some interesting performances from their defenders. Padraig Faulkner scored three points, and as he is a full back in the competition, he would have scored 15 fantasy points. (nine fantasy points for splitting the post three times, minus two for goal conceded, three points for the win, and five for the appearance).

For Tyrone, Lee Brennan was the top scoring forward as he kicked five points. Peter Harte proved that he is still a brilliant option as he scored two points from half back. Ronan McHugh scored 1-3, but it is a risky game to play to pick him or Brennan for that matter to put up big scores in Division one of the national league.

A better option might be players from Antrim who are playing in Division three of the National League. Seamus McGarry scored 0-3 against Monaghan on Sunday, and Ruairi Scott hit 0-2 from just a couple of possessions. Both of those players can be selected at half forward.

Armagh though look like a team that could plunder lots of fantasy points. Ethan Rafferty should be considered by every manager, but also take a look at Oisin MacIomhair who kicked 0-4 against Queens.
