Bellaghy call for GAA clubs to support a Walk for Truth

BELLAGHY Wolfe Tones GAC are inviting GAA clubs across Ireland to stand beside the family of the late Sean Brown.

In a powerful act of solidarity and resilience, the “Walk for Truth” aims to highlight the support for Brown family in their pursuit of a public inquiry into Sean’s death.

In a letter, widely circulated on social media and sent to Gaelic Life, the club are appealing for those attending to wear their club.

“We respectfully ask that attendees wear their club colours with pride,” it read. “Our jerseys are more than sportswear — they are symbols of identity, community, and commitment to values we all hold dear.”

Sean Brown, Bellaghy Chairman at the time, was murdered in 1997 after being abducted by loyalist paramilitaries as he locked the gates of club premises after a club meeting.

He was brutally beaten and shot six times in the head; his body was later found beside his burning car in Randalstown, County Antrim. No one has ever been convicted of his murder.

“The Court of Appeal in Belfast upheld a High Court ruling mandating the UK Government to establish a public inquiry into Sean’s murder,” the letter continued.

“The judges determined that the government’s ongoing refusal to initiate such an inquiry was unlawful, with the order set to take effect on June 2, 2025.

“This event will gather people from every corner of Ireland in a united call for truth, justice, and healing.

The Walk for Truth, aims to highlight the support the Brown family have in their pursuit of a public inquiry into Sean’s death.

“The presence of GAA clubs has always been a source of strength and unity in Irish life, and we believe your participation would carry immense meaning,” the letter continued.

“We sincerely hope your club will join us for this important evening. Let us walk together — shoulder to shoulder — in pursuit of truth.”

Those attending are asked to assemble at 6.30pm in the car park of St Mary’s Church Bellaghy, with the walk commending at 7pm.

The 20-minute walk will continue to the club’s premises at Páirc Sean de Brún.

Parking will be available at both venues and Seamus Heaney Homeplace.
