Cross duo linked with vacant managerial positions

CROSSMAGLEN duo Oisín McConville and Tony McEntee have been linked with the vacant positions in Mayo and Louth.

Mayo decided to part ways with Kevin McStay last week while on Tuesday, Ger Brennan stepped down having delivered a Leinster title to the Wee County with many expecting him to replace Dessie Farrell who ended his Dublin tenure after Saturday’s All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Tyrone.

Both McConville, on the back of a fine job with Wicklow, and McEntee – recently departed from Sligo – have been talked up with a move to the west. McEntee knows Connacht particularly well having worked with Mayo previously as well as the Yeats County.

Gaelic Life understands that neither have been approached by any county as of yet.

McConville still remains in situ with the Garden County with his three-year term up after their Tailteann Cup semi-final loss to Limerick.

“Where am I? Obviously, my three-year term at Wicklow is up,” he stated on the BBC’s GAA Social podcast.

“I haven’t spoken to Wicklow County Board, and I haven’t spoken to one other county board in the country.

“I don’t know why I’m being linked with different jobs, but I haven’t spoken to anybody whatsoever, not even Wicklow, since last week. I’m sure that’ll happen in the next couple of days.

“They can speculate away, I suppose.”

McConville operated out of DKIT and has worked closely with a number of Louth players previously, while their midfielder Tommy Durnin also played a couple of seasons under him when he was manager of Monaghan club Inniskeen.

McEntee, given geographical advantages, is also being mentioned in dispatches as a possible Brennan replacement.

Another Armagh, Silverbridge’s Fergal Reel, is also set to be a serious contender for Louth having guided the county to the All-Ireland U-20 final while Tyrone’s Gavin Devlin has also been working closely with the county.
