IN THE ARCHIVES: Meath win All-Ireland while Carmen and Errigal play out a draw

KILCOO rubberstamped their status as the leading force in Down with a convincing victory over Clonduff in Newry for their 14th ever Senior Championship title.

Loughgiel Shamrocks won the Antrim Senior Hurling Championship with a 1-15 to 1-12 victory over Cushendall, captained by Paul Gillan and DD Quinn.

The Sleacht Néill footballers had a semi-final win over Ballinderry as they continued their march to the three in-a-row. They took command in the opening 10 minutes and won outright by 2-9 to 0-9.

Neighbours Clonoe and Coalisland played out a gripping draw in the Tyrone Senior Championship semi-final, Coalisland’s Stephen McNally fisting a levelling point in the third minute of injury time.

In Armagh, a somewhat out-of-sorts Crossmaglen appeared to be going out of the championship at the quarter-final stage but they ultimately came good, overcoming Armagh Harps by 1-16 to 1-13. Completing the semi-final picture were Cullyhanna, Clann Éireann and Maghery.

20 YEARS AGO

CROSSMAGLEN won their 11th consecutive Armagh Senior Championship with a comfortable 1-14 to 0-8 victory over Clan na Gael. The crucial score was a goal just after the restart, Michael McNamee planting a lovely left-footed shot past Stephen Laverty.

Elswhere, holders Carrickmore forced a replay in the Tyrone Senior Championship showdown against Errigal Ciaran thanks to last-gasp penalty in injury time.

Wing-back Ciaran McAleer, who is now their manager, was fouled and corner-forward Kevin McNally confidently blasted it past Errigal’s substitute keeper Brian McAnenly with the hour up.

Errigal’s chief scoring threat, unsurprisingly, was Peter Canavan, who scored nine points of his team’s overall tally of 0-12.

In Fermanagh, meanwhile, Enniskillen Gaels won the Fermanagh Senior Championship with a deserved victory over Ederney, their seventh New York Cup title in nine years.

30 YEARS AGO

MEATH came up trumps at the second time of asking to overcome Mayo by a single score (2-9 to 1-11) in the All-Ireland SFC final replay.

In a game whch saw many of Meath’s forwards shackled by a resolute Mayo defence, Tommy Dowd’s personal haul of 1-3 as well as 1-4 from his midfield partner Trevor Giles comprised all bar two of Meath’s total as they clinched their sixth ever All-Ireland title.

Mayo had their moments in an entertaining contest but Meath’s Brendan Reilly clipped over the winner to bring Sam back to the Royal County.
