KERRY’S Paul Galvin called time on his Kerry career for a second time.
The Finuge player had retired in February 2014 but made a shock comeback to Kingdom colours the following March.
Injuries hampered that return, but he did come on in the All-Ireland final as Kerry tried to turn things around against Dublin, but they lost 0-12 to 0-9.
In January 2016, Éamonn Fitzmaurice confirmed that his return had ended and he wouldn’t be involved again.
In the McKenna Cup, Fermanagh boss Pete McGrath enjoyed a winning return to Down as the Erne County won 0-14 to 0-8 in Newry.
Tomás Corrigan was a thorn in the side of Down, who were under the guidance of the late Eamonn Burns for the first time, with Seán Quigley hitting half a dozen points after the break.
Stefan Campbell starred for Armagh in a 0-16 to 2-9 win over Monaghan. The Lurgan man hit five points in all while goalkeeper Mattie McNeice pulled off a couple of fine saves.
St Mary’s picked up an eye-catching result as they beat Donegal 2-6 to 0-8.
Jack Grugan scored an early goal with Ryan Johnston sealing victory with their second in Letterkenny.
Tyrone earned the bragging rights against Derry in a high-scoring 1-16 to 4-6 win.
The Oakleafers were the better side for the majority but a red card for Emmett McGuckin opened the door for the Red Hands and Connor McAliskey’s late point marched them through it.
20 YEARS AGO
BRIAN McIver took charge of Donegal for the first time as they defeated St Mary’s by two points in the McKenna Cup, 0-13 to 1-8.
The game was in the balance until the end before late scores from Gavin Maguire and Christy Toye got the Tir Chonaill County off to a winning start.
The goal for the students came courtesy of Michael McIver, son of the Donegal boss.
There were some positive results for students elsewhere.
Ulster University left Crossmaglen with a point after a draw with hosts Armagh.
The away side led 1-4 to 0-6 at the break – Ruairi Convery with their goal – but the Kernan brothers, Stephen and Aaron, combined for six points, although 17 second-half wides cost Armagh the win.
Queen’s, meanwhile, earned a 0-17 to 2-8 win over Antrim at Casement Park.
The students dominated the second half with Armagh’s Brian Mallon and Derry’s Gavin Donaghy both finishing with five points apiece with Micheal O’Rourke adding a brace. Michael McCann and Chris Lynch scored the Saffron goals.
An Riocht were crowned Down u-21 champions after an extra-time win over Kilcoo – the first time they won the title.
30 YEARS AGO
UACHTÁRAN tofa Joe McDonagh won his first county title at the age of 42. He captained Ballindereen to a 1-10 to 2-6 win over Mullagh in the Galway Junior B final.
The Tyrone footballers turned down a potential trip to Tenerife to prepare for the defence of their Ulster title.
They were due to fly out on January 10 but ultimately it was cancelled with a home block of training pencilled in instead – a decision driven by the players.
Cavan left Fintan Cahill out of their side to face Derry as the controversy over players heading to America continued.
It all related to the New York final replay and questions over player eligibility for the match in the Big Apple. The GAA’s games administration committee asked county boards to send the names of players who had featured in the match.
