Tyrone and Dublin clash in Glasgow as ‘Babs’ unleashes on Tipp players

FERMANAGH’S quest for a first win over Galway went on, but they left Tuam satisfied after fighting back to earn a 0-15 to 0-15 draw in their Division Two encounter.

Things didn’t look good for Pete McGrath’s side when Niall Cassidy was sent off just six minutes into the second half, but they showed plenty of fight to remain in touch.

That was rewarded three minutes over the 70-minute mark when Declan McCusker steered over the equaliser.

There was another draw in Division Two as Armagh struck late against Tyrone.

It looked like the Red Hands, who won their first five games, were set for a win over their bitter rivals, but Niall Grimley flicked home late on as Armagh fought for survival.

It was a good outcome for Kieran McGeeney’s side as they played the final quarter with 14 men after Colm Watters was dismissed.

Down’s relegation was confirmed after a sixth Division One loss in a row, a 0-12 to 0-7 loss to Cork in Newry.

It was an uninspiring encounter, with Down actually racing into a three-point lead early on, but they would only add four points from there.

It took 44 minutes for Down to score their first point from play, through Conaill McGovern, and they only added one more from play when Mark Poland raised a white flag.

Antrim were promoted to Division Three courtesy of a 2-13 to 1-12 win over Wicklow. Tomás McCann and Brian ‘Bam’ Neeson led the scoring charge with 2-6 between them.

MICHAEL ‘Babs’ Keating launched an astonishing attack on his Tipperary players, claiming “our lads are dead, only to wash them.”

The remarks came on the back of a 3-11 to 0-12 trouncing at the hands of Galway at Semple Stadium.

“As soon as we have one hole closed there’s another two open up,” Keating added, as well as “We can’t get the drive we want into them. We had frees today and our lads were strolling up to take them as if they were there ‘till 12 midnight.”

The rain came down in Cork and the sides couldn’t deal with it as the Rebels won this Division 1A clash 0-6 to 0-3.

Cork led 0-5 to 0-1 at the break, with fans thinking it couldn’t get any worse. It did. The Rebels only managed one point in the second half and still won by three.

Laois’ character had been questioned plenty of times, especially when it came to grit, but Mick O’Dwyer’s side answered some of it with a 1-15 to 2-9 win over Armagh in Crossmaglen.

Armagh’s two goals were fortunate, the first a Stevie McDonnell miss-hit that struck team-mate Malachy Mackin and found the net and the other a late penalty from the Killeavy ace that was soft, to say the least.

The last Laois score came from a certain Colm Parkinson. Wonder what has happened to him since?

TYRONE and Dublin met in the Willie Dowd Classic in Glasgow – Dublin winning 3-16 to 2-8 in a repeat of the previous season’s All-Ireland final.

Jim Gavin was one of the Dublin goal-scorers with Stephen Lawn and Ciaran Corr raising green flags for the Red Hands.

Armagh maintained their NHL Division Three status with a 0-7 to 2-0 win over Fermanagh in Enniskillen.

Vincent Mone scored six points with Fermanagh managing just two scores in all – a goal in each half.

Tyrone secured second spot in Division Four with a commanding 4-14 to 0-12 win over Longford in Carrickmore.

Eamonn Devlin top-scored with 1-5 with Padraig Devlin contributing 1-3.
