Ulster GAA: Our commitment to ‘games for all’

THE GAA would not exist without the communities we represent and serve. Every club in the Association already supports the development of its communities in a broad variety of ways, whether that’s offering young people the chance to better themselves through sport or by supporting local charities through fundraising events and functions. Supporting the engagement of people with additional needs to become involved in GAA activities is not a new concept for GAA clubs but it is a growing vibrant space that needs help from everyone to make it flourish even more.

Ulster GAA is proud to demonstrate its commitment to “Games for All,” ensuring that people of all abilities can participate, belong, and thrive within Gaelic games. With over 60 All Star teams across the province, the initiative provides meaningful opportunities for players with additional needs to enjoy sport in a supportive and celebratory environment.

These teams foster not only physical activity but also confidence, friendship, and community connection.

A recent highlight saw participants participate at half-time during the Ulster Senior Football Championship semi-finals. This visibility reinforces that Gaelic games are truly for everyone, breaking down barriers and inspiring clubs to continue building inclusive spaces where every player is valued and celebrated.

The Ulster GAA Inclusive All-Star Programme recognises and celebrates the achievements of players with intellectual disabilities in Gaelic games.

It promotes inclusion, participation, and visibility for athletes who may not usually take part in mainstream GAA competitions.

Clubs interested in forming an All-Star team can attend the 90-minute Inclusive workshop to upskill coaches, parents, and volunteers.

For players with physical disabilities, the Wheelchair Hurling initiative offers the chance to compete in matches against other provinces in the All-Ireland League and Championship series.
