ULSTER GAA: Promoting Scór in your club

Scór is at the very heart of the GAA community. It brings together the colour, pride and friendly rivalry associated with Gaelic games and the music, song, dance, storytelling and traditions that form such an important part of our culture. Organised bilingually through Irish and English, Scór gives club members of all ages another opportunity to represent their club, county and province with pride.

Whether taking part in Scór na bPáistí, Scór na nÓg or Scór na Sinsear, involvement in Scór can build confidence, create friendships and strengthen the sense of community within a club. It also provides an important place within the Association for members whose talents may lie beyond the playing field.

Tá ról ar leith ag clubanna CLG i gcur chun cinn Scór agus i spreagadh daoine óga le páirt a ghlacadh ann. Tá áit dúinn uilig ann, agus tá rud éigin ann d’achain duine, idir cheol traidisiúnta, amhránaíocht agus damhsa, aithriseoireacht, scéalaíocht, aisteoireacht agus tráth na gceist. Ní gá tosú leis an chomórtas féin, áfach. Thiocfadh le club oíche cheoil, ceardlann amhránaíochta nó grúpa drámaíochta a chur ar bun le suim agus muinín a chothú i measc na mball. Tá an rannpháirtíocht, an sult agus an bród ag croílár an chomórtais, agus nuair a thugtar deis do dhaoine óga a gcuid buanna a fhorbairt, neartaítear todhchaí Scór sa chlubtheach.

Ní gá do chlubanna tabhairt faoin obair seo leo féin ach oiread. Tá neart acmhainní sna pobail, idir ghrúpaí Chomhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, scoileanna damhsa, cumainn drámaíochta, cóir agus daoine aonair a bhfuil saibhreas eolais agus taithí acu. Trí dhul i gcomhar leis na grúpaí agus leis na daoine sin, thig le clubanna deiseanna úra a chruthú dá mbaill agus an ceangal idir an club, an pobal, an Ghaeilge agus ár gcultúr dúchais a neartú. Tugann Scór ardán do bhuanna nach bhfeictear i gcónaí ar pháirc na himeartha agus tugann sé deis do gach ball dathanna an chlub a chaitheamh le bród. Tá áit ag an pheil agus ag an iománaíocht i gcroílár CLG, ach tá áit ag an cheol, ag na hamhráin, ag an damhsa agus ag an scéalaíocht ann fosta. Tá tradisiún ar leith againn.

For clubs looking to strengthen Scór, the first step can be remarkably simple. Find out where the talent and interest already exist. Speak to musicians, singers, dancers, actors and Irish speakers within the club and wider community. Encourage senior members to mentor younger participants and give children opportunities to perform and practise in a relaxed environment before entering competitions.

And with Scór na nÓg 2026 now approaching its conclusion, November promises to be an exciting month for Scór across Ulster. The two Ulster semi-finals will take place on 14 and 15 November, before the competition culminates in the Ulster Final on Saturday 28 November. Clubs are encouraged not only to get behind their representatives this year, but to use the excitement surrounding the competition to inspire the next generation. Who in your club could be part of Scór na nÓg next year?

The rewards of Scór extend far beyond medals. It creates friendships, connects generations and gives members another way to belong to and contribute to their club. Just as importantly, it ensures that the GAA continues to celebrate not only our national games, but also the language, music, stories and traditions that surround them.

Scór belongs to every club and every member. Sometimes, all that is needed is an invitation to take part.

Ní neart go cur le chéile.
