THE GAA has always been more than sport. It’s about place, people, and the power of community. Now, GAA clubs across Ulster are embracing a new kind of challenge—protecting nature and taking action on climate change.
Through the Sporting Nature Project, 30 clubs are leading the way by making their grounds greener, wilder, and more welcoming for both people and wildlife. From planting native trees and wildflowers to installing bird and bat boxes, clubs are showing how sustainability can sit proudly alongside tradition and competition.
The project, delivered in partnership by Ulster GAA, RSPB NI, NI Water, and The National Lottery Community Fund, provides support, training, and seed funding to help clubs take simple, effective steps to boost biodiversity and reduce environmental impact.
Young members are learning about pollinators and wildlife through fun, hands-on experiences. Families are getting involved in litter picks and nature walks. And club volunteers are gaining practical knowledge in sustainable facility management—from water conservation to habitat creation. It’s also offering new ways for people to connect with their local club, especially those with an interest in the environment who might not have engaged through sport alone.
Clubs don’t need to be environmental experts to get involved. With tailored guidance and a focus on small, achievable actions, Sporting Nature is helping communities to take ownership of their green spaces and become local leaders in climate and biodiversity action.
The impact is already visible, and it’s growing.
