John Morrison

There is a pervading fear that one day the GAA will turn professional, however Gaelic Life Columnist John Morrison doesn’t think it will happen any time soon.

Morrison says that while others don’t think that the structures are in place for it to happen, he believes that the GAA don’t have the skills to pay the bills.

“For me also, the lack of ‘elite skill sets’ in players is not there and could be a long time getting there as only ‘five to eight’ teams dominate the championship each year, producing talk of a tier competition, ie, for lesser skilled teams.

“Thus ‘lack of skill’ to produce a countrywide attractive game means funding will be hard to raise.”

He goes on to explain why they don’t grow up to have these elite skills.
