Down promoted to Division Two after forfeiture

Down have been promoted to Division Two of the National Football League without kicking a football on the return to inter-county action.

Paddy Tally’s side were awarded two points after Leitrim conceded their game in Newry last week. Today, Longford have forfeited their clash with Cork this weekend, which has had a big impact on the promotion race too.

It means that even if Down lose to Louth on Sunday, the only team that can draw level with them is Derry. When two teams are level then it goes on the head-to-head rule.

Down recorded a 0-14 to 0-12 win over the Oakleafers back in February, meaning that they are guaranteed to go up alongside Cork.
