Substitutes the key as Monaghan down Dublin in Clones classic

Allianz Football League Division One: Monaghan 2-13 Dublin 1-13

Monaghan inspired by substitute master and apprentice in Conor McManus and Stephen O’Hanlon have shocked Dublin in the first round of the Allianz Leagues.

The All-Ireland champions raced into an early 1-2 to no score lead after Niall Scully netted after a Dean Rock set-up.

Jack McCarron led the Farney charge for the remainder of the half and ensured that his side were within touching difference at the break on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-8.

There was 43 minutes on the clock when Malachy O’Rourke sprung Stephen O’Hanlon and Conor McManus from the bench, the pair would contribute a combined total of 1-4 to the Farney cause.

It was the latter that kicked his side into their first lead and it was one they would never lose as O’Hanlon capped a dream league debut, rattling the net with his first touch.

In the end, ‘The Dubs’ went in a futile search for a goal that would have got them back into the game but Monaghan held out for a famous victory.
