Tohill junior reaches next stage of AFL recruitment

At the AFL trials

Gaelic Life understands that Anton Tohill, son of Derry legend Anthony Tohill has been selected to go to Florida next month for the next stage of the recruitment process for the AFL.

Tohill was one of 23 players who attended the European Combine in Dublin at the weekend. He was watched by Down’s Marty Clarke, who is an AFL Europe specialist coach, as well as AFL International talent manager Kevin Sheehan.

Having been successfully selected, Tohill will now go to Florida along with the other successful candidates where they will attend the Academy camp to train alongside Australia’s elite underage talent.

Clarke told the AFL website that there has been a shift in focus in recruitment of AFL players towards taller more mobile players. That would have favoured Anton Tohill who is 6″4′.

His father Anthony went to play for the Melbourne demons in before returning to Ireland in 1991, and Anton has said that he had taken advice from his father on how to conduct himself.
