Five minutes with – Tyrone hurler Lorcan Devlin

Name: Lorcán Devlin
Age: 20
Occupation: Student (Studying sports and exercise science)
Teams played for: Eoghan Ruadh Dungannon, Tyrone, UUJ hurling, (Edendork St. Malachys, u16 ulster elite squad, u21 Ireland shinty team.)

Game you most enjoyed playing in?
Either the 2018 senior championship final or the 2015 All-Ireland minor C final against Mayo as well as the replay.

Game you least enjoyed playing in?
Probably the National hurling league Division 3A final against Donegal in 2017. Wasn’t the best day on the pitch.

What’s the worst pitch you’ve ever played on?
I remember when I was u12 we played in a tournament in Tipperary and one of the pitches was actually a farmer’s field for cattle.

Toughest training session you’ve ever been involved in?
We’d a really tough training weekend with the county last year down in Clare and had to come home early on Sunday to play in an Antrim league game. Got the result though.

What’s your preferred brand of gear?
I’ve always been Adidas for boots and Nike for trainers. Hasn’t failed me yet.

Most inspirational individual you’ve ever met?
Sean Óg Ó hAlphín

Where do you like to go out to celebrate?
Usually just keep it local. Hagan’s or Mc Aleer’s.

What do you like to do when you are not training/playing?
Watching all kinds of sport. Big fan of American football and basketball.

Which character in any film/tv show are you most like?
Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights

Which teammates (From any club/county) are the first you’d invite on a night out?
Conor McNally and John Devlin. Conor for the sing song and if John isn’t there it isn’t a night out.

Which team mate is the worst dancer
Definitely JD, there’s evidence to back this up.

Which team mate is the loudest in the changing room?
John Devlin always has something to say.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen happen in training/during a match?
Ruairi Devlin scoring. Think it was just a clearance that went pretty well.

What’s the worst excuse you’ve heard to get out of training and who did it come from?
“Can’t train tonight, just after getting a tattoo” Ben Gormley

Biggest ego?
Sean “Slab” Donaghy

Worst/best person to sit next to on the team bus?
Worst is probably Sean Donaghy or Josh Ferguson, all they talk about is women. Best is probably John Devlin, he’s plenty of stories and gets the whole bus laughing.

Worst/best person to share a room with on away days?
To be honest we very rarely get the luxury of staying overnight but I wouldn’t fancy staying with Josh Ferguson in case he has another accident. Best would probably be Damian Casey just to use his iPad and Netflix account.

Who has the best diet, and who has the worst, and what do they consist of?
Best diet is probably Josh Ferguson – chicken, broccoli and green tea. Worst diet probably Damhlaic Rush, strictly chicken goujons, jaffa cakes and Lucozade sport.

Toughest opponent you have played against?
I remember marking Jack Canning when playing for Ulster u16s against Galway.

Best or worst quote you have heard from a teammate/opponent/manager?
Best: “look good, feel good, play good” Worst: “hit the high ball in low”

Best manager you have played for?
Whoever is managing me at the minute.

What frustrates you most about the GAA?
Fixture congestion between club and county matches and the lack of respected shown to hurling in the so-called weaker counties. Bad refereeing.

What is the best thing about being part of the GAA?
The feeling of community and sense of pride that it creates.
