MacRory Cup knock-out action well underway

By Michael McMullan

A LATE goal shot Omagh CBS to the last eight of the MacRory Cup in a strong finish on Thursday evening.

Omagh led last year’s MacLarnon Cup winner Patrician Carrickmacross 0-8 to 0-2 at the break.

Momentum changed and the sides were level, 0-11, as the game headed for the final bend in the road.

The goal put Omagh four ahead but a late Carrickmacross wasn’t enough the Tyrone school ran out 1-12 to 0-12 winners.

There was success earlier in the day for Monaghan with a 1-16 to 0-12 victor for Our Lady’s Castleblayney over St Joseph’s Donaghmore.

Reigning champions St Patrick’s Maghera and beaten finalists Abbey Donegal have made it through to the quarter-finals of the MacRory Cup.

A combined 0-8 from Odhrán Doherty and Darragh O’Neill saw Maghera edge St Paul’s Bessbrook at Owenbeg, 0-14 to 2-6.

Abbey hit three second half goals from Conor McCahill, Eoghan Gallagher and Jay Cullen to see off Cathair Dhoire on Wednesday night, 3-11 to 0-9, after coming from a point behind at the break having played against the wind.

They will play St Mary’s Magherafelt who were 2-14 to 2-9 winners over St Michael’s Enniskillen on Wednesday night in Lavey.

Michael Lennon was in fine form for the winners with Lorcan Higgins hitting one goal and supplying the pass for Rossa player Michael Higgins to score the second.

Goals from Liam McGeary and Darragh Devlin were the key scores as St Patrick’s Dungannon ran out 2-13 to 0-14 against South West Donegal.

The final two places will be decided by Saturday afternoon with the remaining play-off games down for decision.
