Newbridge hosts ‘A Journey in Time’ to celebrate centenary

REIGNING Derry champions Newbridge are hosting a special heritage day as part of their centenary year celebrations.

Saturday week’s event, titled “A Journey in Time: 100 Years of Newbridge” – will bring the community together to reflect on a century of GAA, music and community.

The day will feature an exhibition of photos, memorabilia and stories – collected from across the community.

There will be a traditional music seisiún by Newbridge CCÉ, and conclude with a talk by Historian, Donal McAnallen on local GAA history.

While the club entered its centenary year as reigning Derry Senior Football Champions, ‘A Journey in Time’ will showcase achievements and milestones across football, camogie, music and more – underlining the strong community within Newbridge and beyond.

“2025 is a landmark year for Sean O’Leary’s GAC. Entering it as county champions is a source of pride, but this centenary reminds us that our strength comes from much more than success on the pitch,” said Chairman Paul McGrogan.

“We are a small club, yet we’ve built something mighty – a community bound together by football, camogie, culture, music and friendship. This day is about recognising the generations who laid those foundations, and celebrating the people who make Newbridge what it is today.”

Beyond football, the club has enjoyed success in camogie and Scór, while also working closely with Newbridge CCÉ to promote Irish music and culture.

“Gathering photos and artefacts for ‘A Journey in Time’ has been a special experience,” added Máire McPeake, curator of the event,

“Each picture, medal and programme tells a story, not only of great games and events, but of the people, families and moments that shaped our community.

“These items give us an insight into the days that went before us, and it’s a privilege to bring them together to share with everyone.”

The exhibition takes place on Saturday, October 4, opening at 2pm in Newbridge Hall

There will be music from Newbridge CCÉ during the afternoon and a guest lecture on local GAA history at 6.30pm by Donal McAnallen. Tea and coffee will be served, and everyone is welcome.
