Queen’s handed quarter-final date with TUD

By Michael McMullan

QUEEN’S will face TU Dublin in next Wednesday’s Sigerson Cup quarter-finals.

The Belfast side booked their place in the last eight with victory over Belfast rivals Ulster University on Wednesday night.

They led for most of the game but needed a stoppage time two-point free from Anton Tohill to put them ahead for the final time.

When Ulster missed a chance to force extra-time, Joey Clarke bagged an insurance goal.

Tohill – the club’s Chairman – captained the team on the night after skipper Dan Higgins missed out with the knee injury sustained against UCC.

Patrick McGurk – who came on to make Clarke’s goal – was listed to start but a fitness test limited him to a late cameo.

Another Derry man, Ruairi Forbes, and Antrim’s Joe Finnegan were late omissions from the Queen’s team.

Another Antrim player, Ryan McQuillan, hit 0-5 in all, including two key two-point frees in the first half.

Luke Diamond kicked a point in the first half with his brother Charlie playing on the Ulster team.

Charlie –  a UU Sigerson winner two years ago – kicking a two-pointer in the second half.

Queen’s are bidding for the first title since 2007. They are managed by Dan McCartan and Feargal Logan, both Sigerson Cup winners in their days playing with Queen’s.
