Passage back into the All-Ireland a major incentive says Antrim boss

By Michael McMullan

DARREN Gleeson says the decision to give both Joe McDonagh finalists a chance to make it back into the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship is a “major incentive.”

The winner will face Cork, while Wexford await the runners-up on the weekend of June 11 ahead of the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

“It’s an amazing incentive for getting to the Joe McDonagh final; you get to be in the last eight of the All-Ireland Championship,” Gleeson stated.

“That’s another big step forward for Kerry and Antrim, two teams that are trying to develop.

“We can get back into the Leinster Championship if we win it and I think Kerry should go back into the Munster Championship if they win it.”

Speaking at Antrim’s press day, Gleeson’s full focus was on their clash with Kerry but feels the current format it the “best way” of helping teams develop.

“After getting to a final, for having momentum for another game instead of having to wait six or seven months for your next game.

“To have the opportunity to pitch yourself against the third team in Leinster or Munster, is great. It would only educate you further on where you need to be.”
