Greenlough unsuccessful in bid to have card overturned

By Michael McMullan

DERRY intermediate champions Greenlough last night heard that their appeal to overturn Marty Kane’s red card was unsuccessful ahead of Saturday’s final showdown with Steelstown.

Kane was dismissed on a straight red card, for dangerous play, in the 51st minute of last weekend’s semi-final win over Drumsurn, who had Ciaran Mullan sent off on a black card relating to the same incident. Greenlough had appealed the decision, but the county board upheld the decision to suspend Kane from this weekend’s match.

Greenlough confirmed to Gaelic Life that Kane was reported for ‘behaving in a way that was dangerous to an opponent.

The game will take place on Saturday in Ballymaguigan (2pm), who will present a specially commissioned new version of the Sheridan, Bateson and Lee Cup to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its existence. The cup is donated in memory of three former players.

Steelstown’s Morgan Murray scored his fifth goal of the championship in their win over Limavady last weekend before being replaced at half time. Manager Hugh McGrath said it was a precaution and that Murray and defender Kevin Lindsay – replaced late in the game – would be available for the final.
