Tributes paid to former Derry star Phil Stuart

TRIBUTES have been made to former Derry midfielder Phil Stuart who has passed away.

Stuart played alongside Jim McKeever when the county reached their first All-Ireland final in 1958.

Alongside McKeever and Tom Scullion, Stuart was part of the county’s management team that landed the Anglo Celt Cup in 1987.

Phil played on the first Queen’s team to win the Sigerson Cup in 1959.

“Phil also left an enduring legacy as an educator and coach, nurturing generations of young talent,” read a tribute from Derry GAA.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”

His club, Ballinderry Shamrocks, also recognised Stuart’s legacy.

“Phil was one of our most famous players and our first Ulster Senior medallist when playing for Derry in 1958,” read a club statement.

“Although only 21 years of age, he partnered the great Jim McKeever in midfield that day, as he did in the county’s first All-Ireland final that year also.”

The statement continued:

“Despite making Belfast his home after his graduation from Queen’s, Phil remained loyal to his roots in Ballinderry and was always proud to play for his beloved Shamrocks until he hung up his boots in 1968.

“As recently as three weeks ago, Phil attended the club’s Centenary Family Fun Day and contributed to the Centenary Video.

“We send our sincere condolences to Phil’s wife Lila and children, Maria, Brendan, Fionnuala and Ciarán.”
