Tyrone and Monaghan set for u-20 decider

By Michael McMullan

Tyrone and Monaghan will meet in next Wednesday’s Ulster u-20 final.

Reigning champions Tyrone came from 0-7 to 0-1 down at half-time to overcome Donegal in Convoy.

The home side were left to rue nine first-half wides when they were in control of the game.

Peter Colton hit Tyrone’s only score of the first-half in stoppage time.

With Conor Devlin making ground, they gained momentum. It was their quarter-final win over Derry all over again.

Sean Broderick was excellent in his marking assignment on key man Shane Callaghan.

A two-pointer from Shea McDermott put Paul Devlin’s side ahead for the first-time, 0-8 to 0-7.

A 45 from goalkeeper Lewis McCaughan, Donegal’s only point of the second-half, levelled matters.

Conor O’Neill was the Tyrone hero last week with his winning goal.

The Donaghmore man kicked a two point free to put his side ahead and on their way to a 0-12 to 0-8.

Kierans the hero

Monaghan were winners over a previously unbeaten Armagh in the other semi-final in the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds.

Two goals from Killian Kierans shot the Oriel County on their way to a 3-13 to 1-9 victory.

A goal from Max McGinnity had Monaghan 1-6 to 0-6 ahead at half-time.

The sides were level at 0-4 each midway through the first-half before McGinnity’s rasper to the net swung the game.

Both teams contested All-Ireland minor finals in recent years but it was Monaghan who pushed five ahead and on their way to victory.

The final will be back in the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds with Tyrone aiming for a third successive title.
