Tyrone ladies power to impressive win against Donegal

Donegal 2-7
Tyrone 4-10

By Niall Gartland

Tyrone produced a hugely impressive performance to defeat pre-match favourites Donegal in the opening round of the Ulster Senior Championship at Lifford.

The result secures Tyrone’s place in the Ulster final later this month, where they will face Armagh, with next weekend’s meeting between the sides now serving as a precursor to that decider. It marks Tyrone’s first appearance in a senior provincial final since 2013.

Donegal entered the contest in strong form, having claimed the Division Two title and previously defeated Tyrone in the league. However, they struggled to replicate that level of performance, as Tyrone took control from the middle of the first half and maintained their advantage throughout.

Sorcha Gormley opened the scoring for Tyrone with a well-taken point after working space under pressure, although Donegal made the brighter early start. Points from Katie Dowds and Shauna McFadden edged the home side 0-2 to 0-1 ahead, with further opportunities limited by solid Tyrone defending from Aoibhinn McHugh and Grainne McKenna.

Despite Donegal enjoying a greater share of possession in the opening stages, Tyrone gradually imposed themselves, combining defensive organisation with effective attacking play. Aoife Horisk levelled from a free before Chloe McCaffrey capitalised on a misplaced pass to score the game’s opening goal.

Tyrone built momentum with further points from Gormley and McCaffrey to move 1-5 to 0-2 in front. They extended their lead when McCaffrey struck for her second goal following a quick exchange with Niamh O’Neill, leaving Tyrone firmly in control.

At half-time, Tyrone led 2-5 to 0-2, having limited Donegal’s attacking opportunities for much of the half.

Donegal responded after the interval with a point from McFadden, and although Tyrone replied through O’Neill, the home side reduced the deficit when Tara Hegarty finished a well-worked move for a goal, making it 2-6 to 1-3.

O’Neill added another free for Tyrone, while Blathnaid McLaughlin registered a point for Donegal as they attempted to close the gap. However, Tyrone’s defence remained resilient, and they effectively ended the contest when Slaine McCarroll converted a goal following good work from Horisk.

Further scores followed, including McCaffrey completing her hat-trick, as Tyrone extended their lead to 4-9 to 1-5. Late exchanges of points and a consolation goal from Ciara McGarvey had little impact on the outcome.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive win for Tyrone, who reversed their earlier league defeat to Donegal and secured progression to the Ulster final.
