NIALL McCOY: Red light, green light

By Niall McCoy

THE guys have a traffic light in place. No, it’s not Squid Games, but it does feel like torture whenever you don’t hit green.

Basically every Saturday Pauric and Conor check in and you pick green, amber or red depending on how your week went regarding a number of disciplines. Fairly self-explanatory, and if you opt for red your phone will be buzzing within minutes for a chat.

After a run of amber, last Saturday I got to hit green and it felt really good to pick that option.

I had eaten very well, I had worked out in the gym a few times. I was presented with options and took some that worked out for me. For example, with no car at my disposal I was forced to walk to the shop on Monday. Roughly a mile each way, it was highly enjoyable and it’s just another thing that will be fitted into my routine.

Swimming. I like swimming, I want to swim. I haven’t been swimming. Pauric rang me and told me to make a splash. I’ll be in the pool at the tail-end of this week.

After a few opening weeks of disruption, I really feel like I am starting to kick into gear. The lads have been extremely positive and it’s their reaction to the weeks that don’t go so well that keep me going. It’s not always going to be perfect, but it’s about refocusing and going again.

And what’s that? Sunlight! It may still be cold but at least the weather is turning. Walking should be easier now. A good week. Room for improvement, but a good week.
