NIALL McCOY: Learning to take the rough with the smooth

By Niall McCoy

GREEN last week, amber this week – and the Gaelic Life All-Stars on the horizon. Red week incoming?

Given I only started with Level Up a few weeks ago, feeling good in my tuxedo was never on the agenda for the awards, but the 2023 All-Stars will hopefully be a different story.

I had a night out in Dublin last week with bad eating and a fair bit of drinking, but, again, the message is – don’t let that become an issue. You have to live your life.

I promised Pauric I would get in for a swim this week. I love swimming, I get wrecked by swimming. I should swim. At the time of writing I have yet to fulfil the promise, but Thursday may present a window.

Swimming reminds me of how easy I can be knocked off my stride, something I know frustrates Pauric although he never lets it show.

A few years ago I joined a triathlon club and while running was – and always has been – a disaster for me, cycling was grand while I took to the swimming quite well. It may sound easy, but try doing drills and laps for an hour and see how you get on.

Anyway, I even made it to the lake a few times and when the ‘tri a tri’ mini event took place, I finished up even though I got a puncture early in the cycle. The swimming, only 250 metres for the event, was very enjoyable.

Anyway, the triathlon was a few months later but I had already booked a holiday for the same week and knowing I wouldn’t be there for it, I just stopped dead in my tracks. I saw no point continuing and just called it a day.

When things don’t go smoothly I tend to take the easy option and that’s what I will be working on this week. Well, after a few pints at the All-Stars anyway.
